Welded gas cylinders are widely used in high-pressure gas storage and transportation. Their technical specifications, as systematic documents guiding design, manufacturing, inspection, and use, are the core basis for ensuring product safety, reliability, and consistent quality. The specifications integrate requirements from multiple disciplines, including materials science, pressure vessel mechanics, welding technology, and testing techniques, covering the entire lifecycle of the cylinder from research and development to disposal. They play a fundamental role in preventing accidents and improving industry standards.

Regarding material selection, the technical specifications specify that the main body of welded gas cylinders should be made of high-quality steel with excellent weldability and a good balance of strength and toughness. Common grades are low-carbon steel or low-alloy steel. Depending on the characteristics of the filling medium, stainless steel or corrosion-resistant materials with surface protection can be selected. Incoming materials must have quality certificates, and samples must be taken for chemical composition analysis and mechanical property testing as required to ensure compliance with standard limits. For cylinders exposed to corrosive or toxic gases, the materials must also meet corrosion resistance or cleanliness requirements to reduce the risk of reaction between the medium and the shell.

Structural design must adhere to relevant design guidelines for pressure vessels, determining the cylinder's geometric parameters and minimum wall thickness based on the nominal working pressure, volume, and medium properties. The cylinder body of welded gas cylinders is generally formed by rolling steel plates and welding longitudinal and circumferential seams to create a closed cavity, with stamped or spun end caps at both ends. Specifications detail weld arrangement, joint types, transition fillets, and reinforcement measures to reduce stress concentration and improve fatigue life. Elliptical or dished end caps are commonly used, as they provide a more uniform stress distribution under internal pressure and save material.

Welding procedure qualification is a key aspect of the technical specifications. Before welding, a welding procedure specification must be prepared, determining the welding method, process parameters, preheating and interpass temperature control, welding consumables, and post-heat treatment requirements. Qualification tests must be conducted to verify the consistency of the weld and base metal properties. The welding process must strictly adhere to process discipline. For multi-layer welding, each layer must be cleaned and inspected. Important welds must undergo immediate visual inspection upon completion, and non-destructive testing (NDT) must be performed proportionally. Common methods include radiographic testing (RT), ultrasonic testing (UT), and magnetic particle testing (MT). The acceptance level depends on the cylinder's intended use and pressure.

After manufacturing, the cylinder must undergo overall heat treatment to eliminate residual welding stress and improve its metallographic structure and mechanical properties. A hydrostatic test is mandatory to verify the cylinder's sealing and strength under overpressure. The test pressure, holding time, and acceptance criteria must all be performed according to specifications. Final acceptance requires a comprehensive evaluation of dimensional accuracy, weld quality, test results, and surface condition. Only after passing these criteria can the cylinder be marked and put into use.

Periodic inspection procedures during the usage phase are also crucial, including wall thickness measurement, weld re-inspection, airtightness testing, and safety accessory verification, ensuring the cylinder continuously meets safety requirements throughout its lifecycle. The technical specifications for welded gas cylinders, with their scientific and rigorous provisions, construct a reliable safety barrier from source to end, providing a solid guarantee for high-pressure gas applications across various industries.
