Welded gas cylinders are an important type of high-pressure gas storage container. Due to their relatively low manufacturing cost and flexible specifications, they are widely used in industrial gases, civilian fuels, and specialty gases.Unlike seamless gas cylinders, which are integrally formed, welded gas cylinders are manufactured using plate rolling and welding or pipe splicing processes. Their structure consists of a cylinder body, end caps, and welded joints. This modular manufacturing method allows for greater diversity in shape and volume design, meeting the differentiated needs of various scenarios.

 

Structurally, the cylinder body of a welded gas cylinder is typically made of high-quality steel plates, rolled and formed, then connected into a sealed cylinder by circumferential and longitudinal welds. Both ends are fitted with stamped or spun end caps. The welding process requires strict control of heat input and interpass temperature to ensure that the weld and base material are matched in terms of strength, toughness, and corrosion resistance. Non-destructive testing methods are used to eliminate defects such as porosity, slag inclusions, and incomplete fusion. The end caps are mostly hemispherical, elliptical, or dished, with elliptical end caps being widely used due to their uniform stress distribution and high material utilization. In terms of material selection, welded gas cylinders commonly use carbon steel or low-alloy steel. These materials offer a good balance of strength and economy while maintaining good weldability. For applications containing corrosive gases, stainless steel or surface-treated corrosion-resistant steel plates can also be used to extend service life. It is worth noting that the presence of welded joints makes the overall stress distribution of the cylinder more complex than seamless structures. Therefore, thorough strength calculations and fatigue analyses are necessary during the design and manufacturing stages to ensure reliable safety under rated operating pressure and in the operating environment.

 

By application, welded gas cylinders are widely used for storing liquefied petroleum gas, carbon dioxide, argon, nitrogen, and mixed gases, with stable demand in catering, welding and cutting, fire fighting, agriculture, and scientific research. Their manufacturing process is mature, production capacity is easily scalable, and it is convenient to provide products with various volumes and pressure ratings to meet market needs.

 

With advancements in testing technology and the improvement of standards, the quality control of welded gas cylinders is becoming increasingly stringent, and the reliability of weld quality and overall performance continues to improve. In the future, while maintaining both economy and safety, welded gas cylinders will play an important role in more niche areas, providing robust support for gas storage and transportation.
